Dr Ierodiaconou was named as a recipient of Victoria’s Tall Poppy Science Awards for his research into hidden treasures on Victoria’s seafloor. Each of the presenters will speak to small groups of students about their areas of research during the program which is hosted by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science. It is being set up like a speed-dating activity. He will outline his marine habitat research which uses sonar and laser technologies and remotely operated video systems to map , hectares of Victoria’s coastal waters. The research has revealed some of the seafloor’s stunning natural features, including ‘gardens’ of invertebrates dominated by magnificently coloured sponges, seaweed forests, off-shore seagrass meadows, and submerged river systems and lagoons that would have supported Aboriginal communities more than 10, years ago. Dr Ierodiaconou said the research would contribute to more informed decisions to ensure habitats for marine organisms are managed properly. Dr Ierodiaconou is one of three Deakin scientists presenting at the coastal and marine forum, which is being run by the Western Coastal Board.

It was noticeable that in the pecking order of the creek the yellowlegs was equal to Common Sandpiper, Ruff and the larger Greenshank but Redshanks were able to bully the stranger away when their feeding desires clashed.
This now lost bird may soon get the urge to continue south, but equally and on past occasions, Lesser Yellowlegs have been known to winter in Britain. The species is a widespread migrant in North America, with primary movement through the interior spring and fall and along the Atlantic Coast fall. Across their wintering range and in the southern portion of their breeding range, Lesser Yellowlegs are often found in the company of their larger congener, the Greater Yellowlegs.
Many observers of the day speculated that populations declined during this period but subsequently recovered once hunting in the USA was outlawed. As recently as , however, several thousand Lesser Yellowlegs were still being shot annually for sport in the Caribbean, and this shooting continues. Recent estimates suggest that 7, , individuals may be shot each fall in migration at wetlands constructed by shooting clubs on Barbados; perhaps half that many may be shot each fall on Guadeloupe and Martinique, with a potentially significant take also on wintering grounds in Suriname and Guyana.
